A few months ago my sister Shirel sent me a story, “The Brave Little Parrot” — a retelling of a traditional Buddhist Jataka tale. 🦜
In the story, when a dark storm caused a vast fire in the little parrot’s green forest, she flew to the river and tried to inspire the animals to help her carry water to save the burning forest. But the animals felt hopeless. They said, “It’s too late. We must stay here where it’s safe. There is nothing anyone can do now.”
So the little parrot said, “I will do what I can.”
You can read the tale here: The Brave Little Parrot, Retold by Rafe Martin.
This story offers encouragement for activists working for human rights and for animal rights. Though the flames of injustice continue to burn widely, each activist brings their own drops of water to help put out the fires. We each do what we can.
